About  pest control
There are several species of pests that are indigenous to the "Low-Country."  (Charleston, Berkeley and Dorchester Counties.)  Many of these "pests" can destroy your home.  While there are many solutions to exterminate them the most effective and efficient method always remain to contact a professional.   Insects have a way of adapting to certain chemicals and after a while these chemicals are ineffective against them.
Darryl Cohen of Cohen Pest Solutions LLC is an experienced, conscientious,  and passionate professional.  He will examine your home and will explain, in every day terms, your problem and tell you the most effective to treat your home.  Below are some of the most common pests and an explanation of how to get rid of them.

Only termites can single-handedly ruin and destroy a house's very foundation and character in just a few short years. The first destructive handiwork of termites may not even be noticeable for the first five years after their infestation. By then, it may be too late. Your home is likely the largest investment you have ever made and the most important. Therefore, it is necessary to take the proper steps to protect your home from termites, and to rid your house of them immediately if they have already invaded your property.Look for signs of an infestation. You may not see direct evidence of termite infestation, but that doesn't mean you should remain ignorant of it. Sagging floors, holes in woodwork and hollow parts of your foundation are all serious warning signs of termites. You may actually see the termites themselves, as well.
Take a screwdriver and flashlight with you to your basement, and examine crawlspaces and foundation beams by tapping on the wood to check for hollowness and to push the screwdriver into the wood to test for strength. If the wood gives easily and falls apart, you may have a termite problem on your hands.
When performing this examination, also be sure to keep an eye out for termite wastes. Termite droppings are wood colored or darker brown pellets of excrement. The presence of these droppings near weakened wood could indicate an infestation.
You may also find a termite nest on your property; a subterranean termite infestation will build a system of tunnels and tubes of mud, while a drywood termite infestation will present itself in a nest inside the wood.

Fleas are pests for many reasons. These small wingless insects feed on the blood of animals and people. Americans spend over 9 billion dollars a year controlling fleas on their pets. Flea bites cause irritation, itching and allergies. One to two flea bites can cause severe allergies in some pets. Fleas that have fed on rodents can transmit plague and murine typhus. However, cat fleas do not transmit plague. Fleas can cause tapeworms in pets and humans.

The life cycle of the flea consists of four stages –egg, larva, pupa and adult. Within 2 days of her first blood meal, the female flea begins laying eggs and produces up to 27 eggs per day. Larvae develop within 5 to 11 days and feed on adult flea excrement. Pupa is the transition stage between the larva and the adult. The pupa forms inside a cocoon spun by the larva. In a week or two the pupa becomes an adult. The adult flea may remain in the cocoon for up to 5 months, but when stimulated by a passing animal, the adult can emerge within seconds. Long-vacant homes can “come alive” with fleas when new people and pets move in.

Don’t wait until fleas get out of hand. Good sanitation and treating fleas on your pets is only part of flea control. For best results call a professional. Cohen’s Pest Solutions can eliminate fleas in any stage of their life cycle inside your home and in your yard with specific non-toxic chemicals.

FIRE ANTS

Fire ant is the common name for several species of ants in the genus Solenopsis that are stinging ants and most of their common names reflect this, for example, ginger ants and tropical fire ants. Many species also are called red ants because of their light brown colour.

Fire ants of those species invasive in the United States can be distinguished from other ants by their copper brown head and body with a darker abdomen. Many ants bite, and formicine ants can cause irritation by spraying formic acid; myrmecine ants like fire ants have a dedicated venom-injecting sting, which injects an alkaloid venom, as well as mandibles for biting. Fire ant bites can cause death in sensitive individuals.

The typical fire ant colony produces large mounds in open areas, and feeds mostly on young plants, seeds and sometimes crickets. Fire ants often attack small animals and can kill them. If there is no cover for nesting, dome-shaped mounds will be constructed, but these are usually only found in open spaces, such as fields, parks and lawns. These mounds can reach heights of 40 cm (15.7 in), and can also be as deep as 1.5 meters (5 feet).

Fire ants are more aggressive than most native species and so have pushed many species away from their local habitat. These ants are renowned for their ability to survive extreme conditions. They do not hibernate, but can survive cold conditions as low as -9 °C (16° F) despite originating from South America.[3][unreliable source?]

Colonies are founded by small groups of queens or single queens. Even if only one queen survives, within a month or so, the colony can expand to thousands of individuals. Some colonies may be polygynous (having multiple queens per nest).[4]

Fire ant queens, the reproductive females in their colony, also are generally the largest. Their primary function is reproduction; fire ant queens may live as many as 6 to 7 years and can produce up to 3,500 eggs per day. That adds up to roughly 9 million eggs produced during a single queen's lifetime. Young, virgin fire ant queens have wings (as do male fire ants), but rip them off after mating. The males (drones) die immediately after mating.

BED BUGS

Bed bugs are blood sucking insects in the family Cimcidae.  Both nymphs and adults feed on sleeping or sedentary humans, mostly at night, a time when this pest's stealthy are difficult to observe.

Bed bugs are found worldwide in association with human habitations.  The common bed bug, Cimex Lectularius, is a widely distributed species most frequently found in California.  The growth and development of C. lectularius is optimal when it feeds on hmans; however, this insect also feeds on other species of mamals and on birds found near the home.

Until recently, bed bug infestations were though to be associated primarily with crowded and dilapidated housing.  However, bed bugs have undergone a resurgence in pest status and can now be found even in the finest hotel and living accommodations.  The reason for this resurgence aren't totally understood but appear to involve increased global travel and commerce, ease of movement of infested items, widespread insecticide resistance, and changes to pesticides available to control this pest.

ROACHES

Roaches have become such widespread pests because they thrive on very little: water, food and warrn shelter. Roachesh ave lived off the bare essentials with few changes since their creation 320 million years ago.  Four roach species in particular inhabit homes in the United States' and knowing which one is in yours can help you plan your attack method.
     *    German cockroach: proliferate quickly and usually nest around the kitchen and    .         bathroom.
     *    Brownbanded cockroach: thrive in hotter, drier regions and will nest in areas,               eye-level or higher inside.
    *     Oriental cockroach: drawn to humid areas sometimes referred to as water                  bugs.
.   *     American cockroach: Also known as the "palmetto bug," they like hot.

Roaches are especially drawn to paper products because they readily absorb a certain pheromone.
or chemical attractor that roaches emit.  This aggregation pheromone is like a GPS system it communicates the insects location to other ones  around and leaves a trail for them to find their ways
back and forth, so remove those paper bags and stacks of newspapers from
around the house!

There are plenty of reasons to dislike cockroaches.  Not only are they creepy but because roaches eat garbage and waste, they can spread bacteria like Salmonella and Shigella from place to place. As they walk, they leave trails of fecal matter, which they use to find their way around.  On top of being gross, these trails can cause stains and odors.  The proteins in cockroach saliva and waste can also cause allergies and aggravate asthma.

People also hate roaches because they can be extremely difficult to get rid of. They reproduce quickly and are hard to kill. Since they're nocturnal, many people don't notice their presence until there are so many that they've run out of places to hide.  Roaches are particularly good at dodging and
running from shoes, Newspapers and other weapons, and several species
have become resistant to insecticides.

Cohen's pest Solutions can kill these nasty pests if they come through your doors. Professional control is needed to effectively eradicate roaches.
 MOSQUITO

A mosquito's life revolves around water.  The female mosquito lay her eggs in water or where it is about to flood.  Once the eggs hatch, the larvae must stay in the water through the pupae stage that lasts 1-2 weeks before an adult mosquito emerges.  The female must have a blood meal before and after laying her eggs.  Mosquitos seldom wander far from the water where they were born.  Removing water in containers or replacing water in containers weekly can dramatically decrease the mosquito population in an area.

Mosquitos transmit diseases primarily West Nile Virus and Heartworm disease.  Mosquitos become infected with the West Nile Virus when they feed on infected birds.  After an incubation period of 10 days to 2 weeks, infected mosquitos can transmit the virus to humans while biting to take blood.  There is no known vaccine or treatment for the West Nile Virus.  Symptoms include headache and body aches.  More severe symptoms can cause fever, stupor, convulsions and rarely death.

Heartworm is a serious and potential fatal disease affecting the heart and adjacent vessels of a dog or a cat.  When a mosquito bites an infected animal, it ingests microscopic worms that are in the saliva of the mosquito.  When the mosquito feeds on an unaffected animal these tiny worms are transferred into the bloodstream infecting the bitten dog or cat.  Preventative heartworm medication is the most effective treatment that will kill the larvae before they develop into adult worms.
